The Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope is a satellite-based observatory aimed at studying the high-energy gamma-ray sky. The Large Area Telescope (LAT), the main instrument, is a pair-conversion telescope which surveys the sky in the energy range that extends from 20 MeV to greater than 300 GeV. The LAT's wide field of view (>2 sr), large effective area and low deadtime combine to provide excellent high-energy gamma-ray observations of GRBs. A second instrument, the Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) provides important spectra and timing in the 8 keV to 40 MeV range. Upon detection of a GRB by the LAT or the GBM, the spacecraft can autonomously repoint to keep the GRB location within the LAT's field of view, allowing high-energy afterglow observations. We describe the details of the onboard search algorithm for realtime GRB detection at high energies with the LAT, along with the prospects for future improvements. We also discuss how the instruments, spacecraft, and ground system work together to provide observations of GRBs at high energies and provide rapid notification of these observations to the wider gamma-ray burst community.
