It is shown how daily observations of Mars during the its opposition in
1988 were used to construct a complete surface map of the planet. The
use of a personal computer to make the map, the adjustments made for the
planetary axis and for constrasts, and the use of filters are addressed.
The identification of surface structures is briefly discussed.
