Varshni (1976) has attempted to show that the statistics of published quasar redshifts strongly imply a uniquely preferred position for earth in the universe if the redshifts are cosmological. The present note challenges the correctness of Varshni's analysis of the randomness of redshift clustering and demonstrates that the distribution of quasar redshifts is in agreement with random expectation. A cosmological interpretation of the clustering of quasar redshifts is briefly outlined which would not give earth a preferred position. In response, Varshni questions the correctness of Stephenson's analysis and performs three tests for the randomness of quasar redshift clustering. The results of these tests are taken to indicate that the redshift distribution is highly nonrandom, at least for clustering that involves three or more redshifts. Stephenson's proposed alternative explanation for the clustering of quasar redshifts is also criticized.
