A procedure for determining the atomic oxygen concentration at 400 km from incoherent scatter data is analyzed for the purpose of demonstrating the validity of the procedure. Calculations of atomic oxygen concentrations from data obtained 1969-1972 are used to construct a model of short and long term variations of the atomic oxygen concentrations; this model complements the model for exosphere temperature, also determined from incoherent scatter data. The atomic oxygen concentration model is compared with other models, and the role of vertical temperature profiles is considered.
