Color-magnitude (CM) diagrams for the nearby southern globular cluster NGC 6397 are derived from photographic measurements of 399 stars calibrated against a UBV photoelectric sequence of 17 stars with V magnitudes of 9.05 to 16.06. The main features of a composite CM diagram for two rings of stars are shown to be typical of metal-poorness and to include a rather steep well-defined giant branch, a large sample of blue horizontal-branch stars with (B-V) colors of -0.08 to 0.26 magnitude, and a lack of red horizontal-branch stars. A true distance modulus of 11.85 magnitudes (equivalent to a distance of 2.34 kpc) is determined, a (B-V) color excess of 0.17 magnitude is adopted, and the cluster is estimated to be 0.49 kpc from the galactic plane and 6.95 kpc from the galactic center. Metallicity parameters are obtained which corroborate the cluster's low metallicity.
