Studies where data from a submillimeter and FIR interferometer are most useful, include those of planets, asteroids, protostars, massive stars, molecular cloud cores, winds, outflows, evolved stars, galactic nuclei, nearby galaxies, and protogalaxies. However, even at sites such as Mauna Kea, the atmospheric humidity introduces serious interference while the atmosopheric extinction introduces phase instability, resulting in visibility of only 0.1 arcsec or less. It is argued that a lunar interferometer offers a satisfactory solution to these problems, due to the absence of an atmosphere and humidity, the availability of a stable platform, and the possibility of extremely long baselines.
