I will discuss current observational evidences for the existence of supermassive black holes in galaxies with an Active Galactic Nucleus. I will describe direct and indirect methods which are used to estimate black hole masses and I will discuss their reliability. Finally, I will briefly compare measured black hole masses with the observed emission from AGNs.
