Some of the evidence supporting a `standard model' for cosmology is described, together with a brief survey of issues in the understanding of galaxy formation in this model. Radio galaxies fit into this picture as the more massive end of the galaxy distribution, and provide good test cases for alleviating our ignorance of some key ingredient in galaxy formation, namely the role of black holes and the nature and extent of feedback.
