RECENTLY, the detection of a linearly polarized component in the galactic background radiation at 408 Mc/s was reported both by the Mallard Radio Astronomy Observatory, Cambridge1,2, and the Leyden Observatory3,4. Both Observatories used the correlation between the observed plane of polarization and the ionospheric Faraday rotation, predicted from ionospheric sounding data, to test the existence of a true polarized component.
