Scientific paper

Observations of X-ray emission from the nuclei of active galaxies are
briefly summarized and their relevance to models for galactic nuclei
discussed. Particular emphasis is given to the recent observations of
X-ray emission from Seyfert galaxies, their luminosity function, and the
time-scale for variability.
