Observations of Vela X taken with the Sky Survey Instrument on board Ariel 5 are presented. The medium-energy X-ray source 2U 0832-45 is found to be extended by 2 deg and may have a relationship to the Vela pulsar that is similar to the situation in the Crab Nebula. A relative deficiency of X-ray emission is indicated from 2U 0832-45 compared with the Crab, suggesting a lower magnetic field in Vela (about 0.00002 G).
