The 2.7-K microwave background is discussed in the context of the Friedmann cosmological model. Attention is given to the spectrum of the microwave background, large-scale and fine-scale anisotropies of the background radiation, and linear polarization of the microwave background. Experimental results pertaining to all these points are examined. Problems are considered which arise from the observations that the microwave radiation shows a large degree of isotropy on angular scales corresponding to spatial regions that were not causally connected at the time of decoupling, and that no anisotropy has yet been found on scales corresponding to existing bound systems.
