Dolginov et al. (1972, 1975) concluded that Mars possesses an intrinsic magnetic field on the basis of magnetograms obtained by the Mars 3 and Mars 5 satellites. This conclusion was rejected by Vaisberg (1974, 1975) and seriously questioned by Russell (1977), who concluded that the satellites never penetrated the Martian magnetosphere. The present paper reexamines the methods and accuracy of determining the magnetic moment of Mars and other relevant parameters from the satellite data. It is demonstrated that all the conclusions of Russell and Vaisberg are erroneous and contradict the experimental data. In particular, the intrinsic magnetic field of Mars is shown to be a barrier to the solar wind, having maximum and minimum values of 100 and 40 gammas, respectively. The dipole moment of Mars and the 'mean barrier height' are estimated, and the terrestrial and Martian magnetospheres are compared. It is suggested that the strength of the Martian magnetic field may be about 1/500 of that of the terrestrial magnetic field, which is in good agreement with the experimental data.
