A Chandra observation toward MBM-12, a nearby (< 300 pc) dark cloud, on 2006 August 17 showed 2.3 photons per cm^2-s-sr (line units, or LU) of emission in the O VIII Lyman alpha line (Smith et al, ApJ 623, 225, 2005).
This emission has been difficult to explain. It must come either from the local hot bubble (LHB, a 100 pc radius bubble of hot gas roughly centered on the solar system), or from the heliosphere, via charge exchange between solar wind ions and interstellar neutrals. The LHB is not generally thought to be hot enough to emit O VIII lines, and the solar wind usually has very little O^{+8}.
We present an analysis of ACE/SWICS data showing an unusual amount of O^{+8} in the solar wind during the six days prior to the Chandra observation. This gas swept past the earth, and was along the line of sight to MBM 12 during the Chandra observation. The Solar Wind Charge Exchange mechanism can account for essentially all of the O VIII emission seen in this observation.
