If the past star formation rates in galaxies are constrained to be consistent with their present colors, and if it is assumed that the stellar initial mass function was not weighted toward massive stars at early times, then only early-type galaxies were conspicuously brighter as primeval objects. Also, a recently reported faint value for the visual background light can be readily understood.
