General star counts have been used over a region of 92 sq deg to derive the photographic extinction due to the dark cloud complex in Corona Australis. The constituent clouds in this complex are found to be systematically distributed in an extensive region of low obscuration. The mass of this extended background material and lower limits on the masses of the embedded clouds have been derived.
