An attempt is made to describe a technique based on the principle of double refraction for measuring the polarization at the limb of solar UV emission between wavelengths of 2000 and 3500 A. This technique, which is apparently not a ground-base method, involves the use of a polarimeter that measures simultaneously the proportion of polarized light at several points on the solar limb and the direction of vibration defined by the angle between the plane of vibration and the plane of vision. The required instrumentation and calibrations are discussed, and results are examined for 1.5 hr of high-quality measurements, particularly of the polarization at 50 arcsec from the limb for 10 points distributed along a solar perimeter. These results are compared with measurements of the polarization rate at the solar limb performed between 2000 and 10,000 A as well as with theoretical calculations of the continuum polarization rate. The measurements of the UV polarization near the limb are analyzed, taking into account the continuum polarization, line polarization, and various depolarization phenomena.
