The energy spectrum of ultra-high energy cosmic rays is one of the key observables needed for understanding the sources and propagation of these extremely energetic particles. Based on the advantages of the hybrid design of the Pierre Auger Observatory, an almost model-independent energy spectrum has been obtained. After summarizing the different steps of deriving this energy spectrum we discuss possible sources of systematic uncertainties. The importance of reducing the systematic uncertainty of the overall energy scale and of determining an common, absolute energy scale that will allow a reliable comparison between measurements of different experiments is emphasized.
