The Mars Global Surveyor Thermal Emission Spectrometer (TES) instrument has returned over 200 million detailed thermal infrared spectra of Mars from September 1997 onwards, creating a comprehensive record of spatial and temporal changes in Martian weather. Due to the difficulties present in temperature and optical depth measurements over cold surfaces, the majority of investigations utilizing TES dust optical depth measurements have been restricted to warm surfaces. This paper presents a method of modeling observations taken over cold surfaces less than 200k. This will allow optical depths to be retrieved over a greater spatiotemporal range than was previously possible, specifically towards the poles. Measurements of dust and water ice opacities over areas exhibiting low surface temperatures are presented to demonstrate the validity of the method; along with a comprehensive survey of variations in dust optical depth over the North and South Martian polar caps.
