The formation and early evolution of massive stars is not well understood and observations do not yet discriminate between competing theories involving mergers of low mass protostars or rapid accretion and subsequent collapse. We propose to undertake a blind search for ultra compact HII (UCHII) regions, which are believed to be an early evolutionary phase following the initial formation of a massive star. The aim is to discover new UCHII regions, particularly outside well-studied large molecular cloud complexes, and what environmental factors might influence the formation mechanism. From two sub-arcmin radio surveys of the Galactic Plane we have a list of 41 objects which are likely candidates. The planned observations are to detrmine the spectral energy distributions and distances, looking to find bright, compact UCHII that are optically thick above the canonical values. These sources will also provide essential southern calibrators for the Planck mission.
