Several theoretical paradigms have been proposed to explain how massive stars can form through the fragmentation and collapse of molecular clouds. These paradigms can be differentiated by their predictions of the spatial distribution and mass function of the clump fragments within the molecular cloud at early evolutionary stages. Through a detailed observational program we have previously isolated a sample of very cold (<10K), quiescent, massive cores with spectral signatures indicating they are both undergoing systematic infall and contain many sub-clumps within the beam -- these are prime candidates for massive star forming protoclusters in the earliest stages of evolution. We now propose to observe these candidate cores at higher resolution to resolve the spatial distribution and mass function of bound star-forming clumps in the cores and hence differentiate between the competing theoretical scenarios.
