This paper deals with some general conceptual aspects of standards and standardization
in the broadest sense. Examples of good and bad standards are presented. We underline the necessary components of any standard system: normalized and reliable hardware, free distribution and maintenance of standards, accurate description of operational procedures, and appropriate teaching.
