A mechanism based on the magnetohydrostatic equilibrium of the solar plasma is proposed to explain the formation of a chromospheric cavity under a filament. In an inverse polarity configuration (the Kuperus-Raadu model), the magnitude of the filament current can be sufficient for its magnetic field to significantly influence the pressure balance in the chromosphere. The magnetic pressure in the chromosphere displaces material under the filament, decreasing the depth of the chromosphere and changing its absorption properties.
