Simulation models are used to investigate how gaseous discs respond to retrograde coplanar encounters. During the encounter, two types of wave are found in the discs. One is the bisymmetric trailing density wave normally observed when shearing discs are excited. The other is also a density wave. It is responsible for a phase during which the pattern is being wound at rates which exceed the material shear rate, and for the initial formation of the spiral pattern.
