The evolution of the intracluster medium in the standard cold dark matter universe is investigated using simulations which include hydrodynamic processes as well as gravitational interaction. The model reproduces fairly well the observed X-ray temperature function of clusters. The predicted and observed X-ray luminosity-temperature relations and the luminosity functions of clusters exhibit discrepancies to some extent, which may be due to missing physics in the simulations, such as radiative cooling, and heating by ejection from galaxies and by galaxy motions. We expect that the temperature of the intracluster medium is not largely affected by these processes, and thus that the theoretical prediction of the temperature function is robust. Hence, at the present stage the standard cold dark matter model is consistent with observations of X-ray clusters.
