The meridional signatures of particles and electric/magnetic field at high altitudes relevant to the premidnight discrete auroras are investigated on the basis of Akebono (EXOS D) satellite data during the substorm on February 7, 1990. The UV images of auroras are used to monitor the structure of precipitating electrons at the ionospheric heights. The meridional structures of electric potentials relevant to the discrete auroras are derived by combining the particle and electric field measurements. It is shown that the large-scale minimum of electric potential at the high altitudes correspond to the optical emissions of discrete auroras. It is inferred that field-aligned acceleration takes place above the satellite altitude and that the lower-energy electrons are trapped between the potential drop above the satellite and the magnetic mirror force below the satellite level.
