We propose to study interstellar polarization in the spectra of reddened early-type stars throughout the ultraviolet range. This is an extension of work done in the optical and infrared and addresses three principal observational questions: (1) does the same empirical polarization curve (Serkowski's Law) extend into the UV?; (2) does the 2175 A absorption feature show polarization?; (3) in the far ultraviolet, does the polarization reflect the strong rise seen in the extinction curve? The results will provide vital new information about the composition and the size and shape distributions of the grains, and the nature of the carrier of the 2175 A feature. Targets are selected to have a variety of ultraviolet extinction and optical polarization properties, to enable us to examine whether the ultraviolet polarization is related to any of these. In Cycle 1, our proposal P2245 has been awarded time sufficient to observe three targets; the present proposal is to increase the number of sightlines studied. In the recent WUPPE observations, evidence was found for excess polarization in the 2175 A feature in one star, and excess in the far UV in two others, out of six stars observed, showing that interstellar properties can be different in different directions. The HST observations will have better signal-to-noise, better resolution and extend to shorter wavelengths than the WUPPE data.
