The paper describes the developments in theoretical physics which led to
the hypothesis that black holes occur commonly in the universe. The
thermodynamics of black holes is considered, the concept of the horizon
is explained, and effects caused by black holes are discussed. The
problems involved in detecting black holes are examined.
