The Jupiter Family short period comets (JFCs) are thought to originate in the Kuiper Belt. However, observational surveys estimate a source population of the JFCs which falls short by more than an order of magnitude the estimates obtained from theoretical models of the dynamical evolution of Kuiper belt objects into JFCs. The smallest discrepancy - still more than an order of magnitude - between theory and observation is for the Scattered Disk source. We re-examine this source of the JFCs, making a rigorous estimate of the discrepancy as well as the uncertainties associated with it. We discuss possible ways to reconcile observations and theory.
