Spectrophotometry of 57 E/S0 sources was obtained, and the data are presented in the form of the equivalent width of the O II forbidden line at 3727 A plotted against a radio-optical flux ratio. Most of the compact objects had strong equivalent width of this line, whereas only a fraction of the extended objects were detected. It is suggested that compact objects have a high probability of strong forbidden O II line emission. To explain this result, it is proposed that since compact radio sources require replenishment of relativistic electrons on a much shorter time scale than extended sources, there must be an infall of thermal gas onto a condensed nuclear object to produce a relativistic plasma.
