We provide evidence that a correlation exists between the angle of the interplanetary magnetic field with respect to the solar wind direction and the ratio of phenomenological and theoretical MeV proton mean free paths, derived from particle observations and quasi-linear theory using the slab model for the observed magnetic field fluctuations. We suggest that this may tentatively be interpreted as an indication that the slab model is not sufficient for describing the magnetic field turbulence. The finding is relevant for new attemps to resolve the old mean free path discrepancy problem.
