Solar wind-related electric fields are known to contribute to the loss of Venus atmosphere constituents, especially oxygen, by direct antisunward acceleration of planetary ions and possiblyby related dayside sputtering of neutrals. It has been suggested that these processes may have played a key role in Venus' atmosphere evolution. Most recently, evidence was found in PVO observations for enhancements of escaping ion fluxes during periods of disturbed interplanetary conditions, which may have been more prevalent in the early solar system. The ASPERA-4 Ion Mass Analyzer and Magnetometer on Venus Express have now made detailed measurements during several periods of exceptionally disturbed conditions created by coronal mass ejections. These new observations provide insights into the response of ion escape to this form of solar activity. We also describe nuances in in-situ studies of these effects, related to orbital sampling geometry, that were not fully appreciated prior to this analysis.
