Small brecciated fragments selected from three Apollo 16 soil samples are analyzed in order to determine the (Ar-39)-(Ar-40) dates at which the breccia-forming cratering events occurred and also to examine petrologically the textural and compositional properties of each dated fragment. It is found that certain anorthositic breccias have ages in excess of 4.1 AE, indicating cratering within the lunar highlands earlier than the 'cataclysmic' stage of about 3.9 AE, that a group of glassy rocks with occasional devitrification areas and lithic fragments is younger than 2.5 AE, and that the youngest group of ages conforms with the more generalized interpretation of those cratering events that occurred around 3.9 to 4.0 AE ago. The relative ages of the Imbrium, Nectaris, and Serenitatis basins are considered in light of the data.
