A detailed nonlinear model for the time evolution by gravitational instability of the power spectrum of density fluctuations in an expanding universe is constructed for various initial conditions and cosmologies. The resulting correlation function xi differs substantially in detail from the power-law (observed) two-point galaxy correlation function, as was previously suggested by Gott and Rees (1975). Moreover, both the dynamics of individual inhomogeneities and the continued growth in open universes of perturbations which are small when the universe goes into free expansion serve to erase information in xi about initial conditions and cosmology over a large range.
