The luminous X-ray transient A 0538-66 was observed by ROSAT in the course of the All-Sky survey. The data were collected with the Position Sensitive Proportional Counter (PSPC) and cover the energy range 0.1-2.4 keV.
Two different outbursts were seen during the observations covering more than two binary orbits. The first outburst near periastron lasted about half a day and showed irregular intensity variations. The second, longer outburst showed a smooth rise and decrease in count rate which lasted around 10 days and had its maximum intensity around orbital phase 0.2. No significant spectral changes were visible during the second outburst. The timing analysis is complicated by the low count rate and the absence of a unique orbital solution.
The source spectra of both outbursts can be described by simple spectral models with no significant spectral variations between the two outbursts. The mean luminosities are 4 × 1037 erg s-1 and 2 × 1037 erg s-1, in the first and second outburst, respectively. The low cold gas absorption indicates that the production region of the soft X-rays is relatively far from the neutron star while the shape of the light curve of the outbursts suggests intervals of increased mass loss from the companion star with enhanced mass flow towards the neutron star.
