On its way to comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, the Rosetta spacecraft will fly-by two main belt asteroids. It will encounter its first asteroid target, 2867 Steins, on 5 September 2008. Many of the scientific instruments on board Rosetta will be switched on during the fly-by to investigate the asteroid. Imaging and spectral observations will be obtained covering wavelengths from the UV to sub-mm. In addition a number of in-situ measurements of the asteroid and its direct environment will be performed. An overview of the planned Rosetta asteroid fly-by will be given.
