The Extrasolar Planet Observation and Characterization (EPOCh) investigation is a component of the EPOXI mission, recently selected as a Mission of Opportunity for the Discovery program. EPOCh will use the CCD detector on the Deep Impact flyby spacecraft to perform high precision visible light photometry of several bright transiting planet systems. The observations will be acquired in Jan-May 2008, during the cruise to comet Boethin. EPOCh will detect reflected light from the giant transiting planets at secondary eclipse, and search for the signatures of rings and moons. EPOCh will also be sensitive to terrestrial planets in these systems, using two detection methods. First, EPOCh will search for direct transit events caused by approximately Earth-sized planets, particularly "hot Earths" that are predicted to be captured in low order mean motion resonances with the giant planets. Second, EPOCh will perform transit timing measurements for the giant planets, and search for timing variations due to terrestrial planet perturbers. EPOCh also will observe our Earth in a global synoptic view, in the wavelength range 0.3-4.7 microns, characterizing its properties as an astronomical object, so as to support future extrasolar terrestrial planet imaging missions.
