Space-based thermal infrared observations provide a powerful tool for detecting and measuring NEOs. The thermal IR emission from asteroids typically contains a few hundred times more photons than the reflected sunlight. The number density of astronomical background sources brighter than a small NEO is about hundred times smaller in the thermal infrared than it is in the visible. Infrared fluxes provide valuable information about asteroid sizes using radiometric techniques, and in combination with optical data provide good estimates of albedos. IRAS obtained diameters for more than a thousand asteroids, and the upcoming WISE mission should provide diameter data for a hundred times more objects, including a large number of NEOs.
