The discovery and characterization of the Near Earth Object population of natural asteroids and comets continues to collect interest, not only from the planetary science community but also from the broader space industry and policy forums as well. Interest even on Capital Hill has been indicated via the NASA Authorization Act of 2005, which requested of NASA options for a more comprehensive search for these objects than has been undertaken to date.
In this short presentation, we will quickly review the current state of NASA's NEO Observation Program and discuss aspects of the recent report submitted by NASA to Congress in response to the 2005 Authorization Act. This will include potential directions for NASA NEO Program in future years as well as set the stage for the other presentations in this DPS session.
