Gravitational Lensing
Scientific paper
We present results from high-resolution VLBA observations of the gravitational lens system B0218+357, made at 15 GHz. These reveal clear differences in the shape and orientation of the structure of the background source seen in the two images. By comparing the properties of this structure in the images, we show how the laws of gravitational lensing are obeyed in this system, and investigate the A and B image relative magnification matrix. We show directly from these observations that the lens potential is non-spherical.
