A homogeneous set of optical and radio data has recently been obtained for a complete, flux-limited sample of southern radio sources. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate the log P_core versus log P_tot correlation and the distribution of the observed parameters P_tot, z and R (the ratio of the core and the extended flux densities). The sample properties can be well reproduced if the beaming of the core is described by a mean Lorentz factor gamma~3, but there is evidence, both from this work and from other arguments, that the low- and high-luminosity sources tend to have somewhat lower and higher values, respectively. While the use of a local radio luminosity function describes the general properties of the sample quite well, there is evidence for some luminosity evolution in the most distant objects (0.5<
