We present results from an extensive number of PSPC spectral fitting simulations, performed with the aim to ascertain the dependence of the quality of the fit on photon counting statistics. In particular, we investigate the reliability of the results and their sensitivity to the assumed model in the case of X-ray emission from optically thin plasmas in thermal equilibrium, typical of stellar coronae and supernova remnants. We consider both single-temperature and two-temperature Raymond-Smith emission models, and the effects of contamination from either low or relatively high diffuse X-ray background. We explore the relative errors on the fitted temperatures derived from the simulations, and discuss constraints on the inferences that can be drawn regarding the existence of two components with different temperatures and emission measures in the observed spectrum. We also discuss the possibility that the presence of two components could be erroneously inferred from the analysis of a single-temperature spectrum. Moreover, we address the issue of the statistical independence of the spectral bins used in the fit by testing the agreement of the distribution of χ^2^ values obtained from the simulations with the theoretical distribution. Finally, we briefly investigate advantages and drawbacks of using the C statistics as an alternative to the χ^2^ statistics.
