A number of possible meteoric rocks from China, supplied by Silvano Minuto (Suno Observatory), were studied by a last-generation SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) instrument. Pictures taken by the BSE detector (able to capture the backscattered primary electrons) permitted a surprising series of discoveries about the internal morphology. Microanalyses performed by a SEM-EDAX probe (a detector of secondary X-rays, emitted specifically by different atoms) gave fundamental information about the real origin of each rock. Some ordinary or carbonaceous chondrites and some metallic meteorites were singled out. This work demonstrates that the SEM is the more simple and sure instrument for quickly realizing the cosmic origin of an unknown rock.
