Filters for detecting linear and circular polarization have been constructed for the UK Schmidt telescope. The first plates with these filters have been taken, and are presently being reduced. In this paper, the filters are described and threshold levels for the detection of polarization are estimated using calibration objects. The calibration objects were the BL Lac object OJ287 for linear polarization and the magnetic white dwarf LP 790-29 for circular polarization. The 4 sigma detection threshold is 10-12 per cent for both linear and circular polarization from one set of plates.
