The GAIA mission approved by ESA will have a large impact on the science of asteroids. In contrast to its predecessor Hipparcos, the GAIA satellite will observe the whole sky up to magnitude V<20 and up to elongations as small as 35 degrees. The observations gathered during the 5 years mission (possibly more) will provide high accuracy astrometry and multi-bands photometry. They will allow major improvements in our knowledge of the asteroids and hence on the formation and evolution of the Solar System: populations census (trojans, bright KBOs, IEOs), discovery of new objects, detection of binary asteroids, determination of physical parameters (mass, size, density, taxonomy), orbits improvement, test of general relativity, and linking of reference frames.
