A survey of the typical features, advantages, and limitations of very long baseline interferometric (VLBI) methods is presented. The article covers: instruments for intercontinental-scale and short base line interferometry (masers, clocks, recording equipment, memories), angular resolution and spacing of system antennas, sensitivity, coverage of the spatial frequency plane, restricted phase information, intensity distribution and the inversion problem, VLBI precision measurements of angular position and distance, and interference diagrams of extragalactic objects. Treatment of minimum available information, plotting of intensity lattice points with iterative improvements, synchronization errors between remotely positioned clocks, and multielement interferometry in the measurement of radio sources and radio nuclei of galaxies are discussed.
