Seasonal changes in the intensity of polar-cap and low-latitude geomagnetic bays are analyzed in order to examine characteristics of DP 11 and DP 12 disturbances. It is shown that these two types of disturbances differ in both their morphological features and origins, that DP 12 disturbances are associated with purely ionospheric currents, and that DP 11 disturbances are probably generated by a Birkeland-type current system. The development of DP 11 disturbances is attributed to magnetospheric instabilities which cause a sharp increase in particle precipitation and certain other events in the ionosphere.
