A petrological model for the moon has been proposed based on the hypothesis that the moon is a gravitationally differentiated body which fissioned from the proto-earth. While this model matches the constraint that the source region of mare-basalt magmas is a pyroxene-rich peridotite lying at depths of 200 to 500 km, available mare-basalt data indicate that the source region is dominated by olivine, has a near-pyrolite composition, and lies at depths of 60 to 200 km. The originally proposed crystallization sequence for a moon of fission origin is reviewed, and it is found that this sequence, even when modified, cannot account for an olivine-rich upper mantle if the bulk composition of the moon is pyrolite. It is shown, however, that the crystallization sequence that has been proposed to explain the rhythmic banding in terrestrial ultramafic complexes is able to account for the high olivine content of the lunar upper mantle based on a bulk pyrolite composition. It is concluded that a model based on this sequence, plus available lunar heat-flow and seismic data, all strongly support a fission origin of the moon.
