Observations of zodiacal light indicate that the imaginary part of the refractive index of interplanetary grains is approximately equal to 0.01. The high conductivity implied by this value is difficult to reconcile with the composition of the grains. Olivine is capable of the implied conductivity only if it is saturated with 'donor' hydrogen of solar-wind origin.
