High-resolution observations in the near-infrared region were carried out on the peculiar object V1016 Cyg at 8446 A (O I) during a time interval of 6 months. In this period the line intensity showed no appreciable variations, being approximately 5 x 10 to the -12th ergs/sq cm s. By comparison with H-alpha measurements an unusual H-alpha optical depth /tau(H-alpha) equals 10,000/ together with a very small tau(O I) (8446 A) are derived. The excitation mechanism of the O I line seems to be resonance-fluorescence by trapped L-beta photons. By considering the diffusion of resonance lines in a neutral shell a typical dimension of the order of 10 to the 17th cm is derived.
